Gary Saul Morson, Professor, Slavic Languages and Literatures Block Museum Auditorium

This series of lectures examines George Eliot's novel Middlemarch, often considered the greatest novel in the English language and the mode l work of literary realism. Professor Morson will explore the novel's psychological depth and ethical complexity, with special attention to the wisdom Eliot conveys and the ways in which she does so. Professor Morson's method will include close reading of particular passages, alternating with explanations of what Eliot is conveying in them. Class members are encouraged to have a copy of the book handy during the lectures. Preferable editions are the Modern Library giant (if available), or the Norton Critical Edition.
